What is a squirrel cage asynchronous motor design?

Three phase motor 415V vs 400V in Australia

Under Australian Standard AS 60038, the normal three phase voltage is 230/400V. However, in industrial and commercial markets, the 415V is still the most common label on motors. But in fact they are practically equivalent for most selection, so for best search coverage, remember to label both in specifications. 

How to select the right three phase motor

There are multiple features you will need to know before you select your own three phase motor, including power range, number of poles, mount type, frame size and so on. The details will be introduced in the following content. 

Power and number of poles

Power range: 0.18kW – 22kW (0.25HP – 30HP)

Number of poles that affect speed:

2 pole: ~2800 rpm

4 pole: ~1400 rpm

6 pole: ~950 rpm

You should choose based on the machine’s torque and speed requirements. 

Mount Type and Frame Size

Common mount type: B3(foot), B5(flange), B35(foot + flange), B14(small flange)
