Single Phase vs Three Phase — Which Motor Do You Need?

The most common question we answer on the phone. The answer depends on your power supply and your load.

Single Phase — GMYL Series (240V)
✓ Runs on standard 240V household / light commercial supply
✓ Right choice when there's no three-phase connection
✓ Range: 0.25kW–5.5kW (0.33HP–7.5HP)
✓ Typical use: water pumps, band saws, grain augers, small compressors, conveyors
Not practical above 5.5kW — starting current exceeds most residential switchboards
Three Phase — GL / YX3 Series (415V)
✓ More efficient, runs cooler, lasts longer at equivalent power
✓ Standard for industrial/commercial premises with 3-phase supply
✓ Range: 0.12kW–37kW
✓ Typical use: conveyor drives, industrial fans, compressors, machine tool spindles
No 3-phase at your premises? See VFD option below
No three-phase supply? Use a VFD. A Variable Frequency Drive accepts 240V single phase input and outputs 415V three phase — making a three phase motor usable in a residential workshop. Three phase motors run cheaper, cooler and longer than single phase equivalents, and the VFD adds soft-start protection plus full speed control. Trade-off: added upfront cost, and the VFD must be sized to at least the motor's kW output. Call 0401 634 280 to confirm the right pairing before ordering.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a three phase motor if I only have single phase power at home?
Yes. A VFD accepts 240V single phase input and outputs 415V three phase, making a three phase motor usable on a standard household circuit. This is widely used for home workshop lathes, milling machines, and larger air compressors. The VFD must be rated to at least the motor's kW output. Call 0401 634 280 to confirm the right pairing from our current stock.
What is the difference between the GMYL and the GL/YX3 motor series?
GMYL series: single phase, 240V, 0.25kW to 5.5kW — for use where no three phase supply is available. GL and YX3 series: three phase, 415V, 0.12kW to 37kW — for industrial and commercial premises with a three phase connection. Three phase motors are more efficient at equivalent power ratings and have a longer service life.
Is HankeMotor the same business as Cononmotor.com.au?
No. HankeMotor (hankemotor.com.au) and Cononmotor.com.au are two separate, independently operated stores with their own product listings and customer service teams.
