NEMA Frame vs IEC Frame — What Is the Difference?

Australia uses IEC metric frames as the default standard. Equipment manufactured in the United States and Canada uses NEMA imperial frames with different mounting bolt patterns and shaft diameters.

Not All "Frame 56" Motors Here Are NEMA — Check Before Ordering
A small number of Frame 56 motors in this range use a British flange mount instead of NEMA C-flange. The shaft diameter (16mm) is close enough to NEMA's 5/8" (15.87mm) to look identical at a glance, but the bolt pattern is different and the two are not interchangeable. Check the product title for "NEMA flange" vs "British flange" before ordering, or send us your equipment's mounting dimensions to confirm.

NEMA Flange Motor FAQ

What is a NEMA C-type flange and how does it differ from IEC B5/B14?
A NEMA C-type flange is a square 4-bolt mounting pattern used on American and Canadian industrial equipment. It has a 2.625" × 2.625" bolt circle with a 5/8" (15.87mm) shaft. IEC B5 and B14 flanges are metric circular bolt patterns — 100mm bolt circle for Frame 90 — with a 24mm shaft. The two standards are not interchangeable without an adapter plate.
Can this motor run on Australian 240V single phase supply?
No — this is a three-phase motor. It requires a three-phase 415V supply, or a single-phase 240V VFD to convert domestic power to three-phase output. If you need to run it from a standard 240V single-phase circuit, pair it with one of HankeMotor's 0.75kW or 1.5kW Fulinn VFD inverter drives, available separately.
How do I know if my equipment needs a NEMA Frame 56 motor?
Check the original motor nameplate or equipment manual for the frame number. If it says "Frame 56", "56C", or "NEMA 56", this motor is a direct replacement. You can also measure the shaft diameter — NEMA 56 uses a 5/8" (15.87mm) shaft, while IEC Frame 90 uses 24mm. Note: a small number of Frame 56 motors in our range use a British flange mount with a similar 16mm shaft but a different bolt pattern — check "NEMA flange" vs "British flange" on the product listing, don't rely on shaft size alone.
Is this motor compatible with a variable speed drive (VFD)?
Yes. This TEFC three-phase motor is VSD/VFD compatible. For operation below 30 Hz for extended periods, ensure the motor is not overloaded — the fan cooling efficiency reduces at low speed. For low-speed continuous duty, consider a motor with forced external ventilation or derate the load to 70–80% at speeds below 25 Hz.
What is the dual voltage 240V/415V setting?
This motor has 6 terminal leads in the terminal box, allowing connection in star (Y) for 415V three-phase, or delta (△) for 240V three-phase. Most Australian three-phase supplies run at 415V, so standard installation uses the star connection. The delta connection is used when running from a single-phase VFD outputting 240V three-phase.
